At MindfulnessUK, we’ve been teaching mindfulness in the workplace for many years. And yet, we’re still often asked questions like: “What is mindfulness?” or “Isn’t it just a fad?”

Some even say it’s the buzzword of the moment. While that way of thinking brings a touch of sadness, it also gives us hope—because it means people are curious, and curiosity opens the door to understanding.

Mindfulness is not new. Its roots go back more than 2,600 years to early meditation practices, but in the modern West it was pioneered in the 1970s by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Importantly, mindfulness as we teach it today is secular, practical, and accessible to all.

  • It is not religious or spiritual.

  • It does not require special equipment or hours of practice.

  • It can be integrated into daily life—while walking, eating, writing, or simply pausing to breathe.

Mindfulness meditation is the more formal practice, but even just 10 minutes a day can have an impact.

The Science Behind Mindfulness

Many people ask: “How can sitting quietly really reduce stress and anxiety?”

The answer lies in both awareness and neuroscience. Mindfulness strengthens our ability to notice thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. Once we notice, we gain choice—to respond rather than react.
